Signs You Have a Hormone Imbalance

Signs You Have a Hormone Imbalance

Every part of the human body needs hormones. They are the messengers of every system, sending chemical-powered instructions to organs, blood vessels, tissues, and even the brain. It makes sense, then, that a hormone imbalance can leave the sufferer feeling severely under the weather.

Understanding the signs of a hormone imbalance and how to treat it can help anyone return to feeling like themselves fast.

What is a Hormone Imbalance?

Hormones are produced in the endocrine glands and system, including the thyroid, the pancreas, the pituitary gland, and many other glands and organs throughout the body. These hormones control so many bodily functions.

Most people know that hormones bring about puberty, and hormone levels change dramatically during periods like pregnancy or menopause. However, hormones also manage day-to-day bodily functions such as mood, libido, metabolism, and bone density—basically anything in the body that requires chemicals.

When everything is balanced, and no diseases are present, the body should function well. However, a hormone imbalance occurs when there is too much or too little of a specific hormone.

A lack of serotonin, for example, could cause mood swings. Too much testosterone can cause aggression and male pattern baldness. Thyroid hormones must be well balanced, as any imbalance can affect many bodily functions.

Symptoms to Look Out For

How does someone know if they’re experiencing a hormone imbalance? While there are numerous symptoms, here are some of the most common factors to look out for that can be detrimental to daily life.

Depression or Anxiety

Any change in mood could be due to hormonal imbalance. When stressed, the body releases excess cortisol, a hormone synthesized from cholesterol. When regulated, cortisol helps manage metabolism and immune function. However, too much cortisol can cause mood swings, stress on the heart, and feelings of overwhelm which may lead to anxiety or depression.

Constipation

Studies show that fluctuating estrogen levels can lead to uncomfortable constipation, regardless of gender. Constipation can have lasting consequences, such as hemorrhoids or fecal impaction.

Weight Fluctuations

Hormones can affect appetite and how the body stores fat. It’s important to note that a hormone imbalance could cause either weight gain or weight loss, so any sudden change in weight should be considered a warning sign.

Poor Energy Levels

The thyroid is particularly associated with low energy levels. If someone is getting enough sleep, eating well, and exercising regularly, yet still tired, they should consider that hormones could be the problem.

Menstrual Problems

Anyone who menstruates and has an irregular cycle, spotting, or excessive pain likely has some hormonal imbalance. Always consult a medical professional to rule out more serious conditions such as endometriosis.

Lower Sex Drive

The libido runs on hormones, so when they’re out of balance, this can be one of the first things to suffer. A sudden, out-of-character disinterest in sex or intimacy could indicate hormonal issues. If a partner comments on a lack of interest in the bedroom, it could be time to think about hormone balancing.

Treating A Hormone Imbalance

Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to address hormone balancing. Testosterone replacement therapy or TRT therapy is a conventional hormone treatment aimed at increasing and maintaining a healthy level of testosterone for improved overall health. This is usually done via a needle straight into the gluteus muscle.

For needle-phobic folks, there’s also a pill option called enclomiphene which stimulates the production of testosterone in the body.

Another option is hormone pelleting. These pellets contain appropriate amounts of specific hormones to aid in hormone balancing. They’re inserted painlessly under the skin, and the pellets release the hormone to help the individual feel more balanced and in control. Usually, tests are taken before hormone pelleting to determine exactly what dose of hormones is needed in a particular situation. Pellets may contain testosterone or estradiol, a hormone that impacts the menstrual cycle, neurological system, and skeleton.
